Find your ring size

Getting the size right the first time saves a fortnight. Two ways to find it at home, both accurate to about half a size — and if you are between two, take the larger one.

First, if you are printing this

Print at 100% or Actual size — never "Fit to page", which shrinks everything by about a twenty-fifth and is worth a whole ring size.

Then hold any bank card against the outline below. If it does not sit inside it exactly, the print is scaled and nothing on this page will measure right.

On a phone, do not measure against the screen. A phone draws a "millimetre" at whatever size its screen happens to be, and the card above will not match — that is the check working, not a fault. Print the page, or use the paper-strip method below and a ruler.

If you already have a ring that fits

This is the accurate way. Take a ring that fits the finger you are buying for, and lay it over the circles below until the inside of the band lines up with a circle's edge. The number beside it is your size.

If the ring sits between two circles, take the larger one.

If you do not

Cut a strip of paper about 6 mm wide, wrap it snugly round the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and lay the marked length along the scale below. Read the size off the scale.

The scale is in millimetres. Measure in the evening — fingers are at their largest then, and a ring that only fits in the morning is a ring that comes back.

Fingers change size through the day and with the weather. Measure in the evening, at room temperature, and measure the hand the ring will be worn on.
